Calhoun Falls is a town with an interesting plumbing history. Organized in the 1890s and incorporated in 1908 when Calhoun Mills Company built its cotton mill, the core of town is early 20th-century mill-village vernacular plus 1920s–50s bungalows, with post-1980 lakefront development following completion of the Russell Dam in 1983 and the opening of Calhoun Falls State Park.

Plumbing Paramedic 911 serves all of Calhoun Falls from our Abbeville base — about 25 minutes out. Owner Eric Callaway is a South Carolina Master Plumber (M114506) with 30 years in the trade. 24/7 emergency line at (864) 446-8911.

Calhoun Falls SC Plumbing Intel

Calhoun Falls doesn't treat its own water — it buys from Abbeville

Here's a little-known fact: the Town of Calhoun Falls doesn't operate a water treatment plant. The town operates the distribution system only — 45+ miles of main and two elevated tanks — and buys wholesale treated water from the City of Abbeville through a master meter. Abbeville's Vienna Street plant draws from Lake Richard B. Russell, so Calhoun Falls residents are effectively on Lake Russell water — but with additional travel time through the distribution system.

The town does operate its own wastewater treatment facility with a lagoon system and polishing pond with floating aerators, last substantially upgraded around 2005.

$4.6 million USDA grant upgrading the water system in 2024

Calhoun Falls received more than $4.6 million in USDA Rural Development loans and grants in 2024 (plus a separate $350,702 Water and Waste Disposal Loan) to upgrade the water system. The work includes new meters, replaced pipes, new hydrants, reconnection of service lines to newly installed mains, and improved fire protection pressure. This addresses extensive non-revenue water loss from aging distribution breaks. USDA funding is also replacing floating aerators at the WWTP with diffused aeration and blowers powered by solar.

The July 2017 manganese event — and why it matters

In July 2017, widespread brown tap water appeared across Calhoun Falls. Heavy rainfall raised manganese levels in Lake Russell, and because Calhoun Falls is miles from Abbeville's treatment plant, the added travel time allowed Mn to oxidize in the distribution lines, staining fixtures and laundry system-wide. SC DHEC confirmed the water was safe, but the event illustrates the chronic manganese/iron staining risk inherent to long, aging mains supplied with surface water. We install whole-home sediment and manganese filtration for homeowners who want to address this proactively.

Lake Russell lakefront plumbing considerations

Lake Richard B. Russell — 26,000 acres, completed 1983, shared SC/GA on the Savannah River — is adjacent to town. USACE federally owns and manages the shoreline, and private development on the water is prohibited. So most "lakefront" homes in Calhoun Falls sit back from the water and run private wells and septic systems permitted through SCDES Regulation 61-56. We're one of the few plumbers in the region who specialize in well pump service, so we handle these calls routinely.

Mill-village housing and galvanized pipe failures

The core mill-era housing (1908–1940) in Calhoun Falls carries the highest probability of original galvanized steel supply with cast-iron DWV. Galvanized steel has a 40–70-year life; these pipes are now 85–115 years old and failing in predictable patterns. Restricted flow, rust-colored water after periods of non-use, pinhole leaks at threaded joints — all classic symptoms. We repipe sections or whole homes depending on severity. In-house financing available for whole-home repipe.

Calhoun Falls landmarks and population

2020 population was 1,724 (down from 2,004 in 2010 and 2,303 in 2000). Calhoun Falls State Park has 86 standard campsites with RV/tent hookups. Local schools: Calhoun Falls Charter (6–12) and John C. Calhoun Elementary (PK–5). Shoreline boat-dock plumbing requires air-gap or RPZ backflow protection per SCDES Regulation 61-58.7(F) when any dock spigot, cleaning sink, or dock light is fed from a home potable system — we test and install.
